BOWLING, CROQUET AND TENNIS CLUB.

Opening of the Season at

Waiuku.

The Waiuku Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club's official opening of the season took place last Thursday afternoon. The weather promised well but as the afternoon advanced a light rainfall made matters a little uncomfortable. Some interesting sport was experienced, and until the rain came on somewhat heavily a very enjoyable time was spent by all. For two or three weeks past the opening day had been put off owing to clashing with other events, as Mr R. T. Reid, (president indicated in the course of a few remarks. Another mntter which also delayed the official opening was the consideration of the question of providing a new pavilion. Mr Eeid expressed pleasure, as president of the club, in extending a welcome to visitors and members to the opening of the season for bowls, tennis and croquet. He hoped they would all have a pleasant afternoon's sport and that everyone would go away perfectly satisfied. The greens* wero then declared officially open for play. Mrs Keid threw down the first " Kitty," Mrs Sedgwick hit off on the croquet lawD, and Miss Poultney played the first shot on the tennis court, each event being signalled by hearty cheers.

Games were tben proceeded with enthusiastically, the event in the howling section being a match between teams representing the President and vice-president, which the latter won by 42 points against 35. Following are the details, the president's team being mentioned first: Grigor, Vaugban, Mearos and Barter (skip) 24, Mclntyre, Fenwick, Kossiter and Williams (skip; 16 ; A. M. Barriball, Bockett, H. King and Keid (skip) 11, against Stone, Gribble, Eames and Lawrie (skip) 26. Refreshments of an appetising order were supplied by the ladies, and met with keen appreciation. Prior to the cessation of play owing to bad weather, Mr Barter, on behalf of the Pukekohe visitors, expressed their pleasure in being present at tho function, and spoke in high terms of the manner in which they had been entertained that day and also on their previous visits. On the call of Mr Barter hearty cheers were accorded the Waiuku Club members, and at the instance of Mr Reid a similar compliment was paid the visitors.
