MERCER.

A large new baige has arrived to the order of Mr C. C. Davis. - Welcome rains fell on Thursday and Friday last, but were not sufficient to heighten the river, which is still the cause of much anxiety to most of the Mercer people. The annual school concert was held in King Edward Hall on Friday evening Inst, a large ard appreciative audience being present. Much credit is due to Mr Ctarlea Edwards, Misses Frost and Keat for their work in teaching the children their parts, some of the "turns" of the children being very clever indeed. . The school committee worked assiduously and with the vocal assistance of Messrs Stanton, Gurney, Vosper, Mcrgon, Tribe, and the members of the Mercer Glee Club, greatly assisted in making the concert such a success. The takings, which go towards prizes for the children's picnic, amounted to nearly £lO. The following contributed to the programme:—Mrs Busb, Messrs Stanton, Gurney, Morgon, Vosper, Seymour, Trihe, Stanto, Roie Kidgley, D. Soppert, S. Bilderbeck, Jessie Watts, Doris Bush, Jim Drabble, G. Laming, Mora Kelley, and choruses of boss and girls. During the entertainment Mr Edwards illustrated with "limelight" snngs, various Mercer views and pictures. The Mercer Rowing Club held trial fours on Saturday, 28th inst.. Six crews competed. The following being the resullFirst heat: B. Collins 1, C. Tarrant 2, J. Barron 3, C. Koose stroke, beat A. Wright H. Bilderbeck 2. A. Bray 3, S. j'. Bates stroke. Second heat: K. Ryan 1, H. The racing was exceedingly good, some close finishes resulting. L. Nielo's crew rowed ver y well and thoroughly deserved their win. Mr Landon kindly acted as judge. By the showing of the crews last Saturday, something certainly will be heard of the Mercer Club at the forthcoming resatta. The annual meeting of the Mercer Regatta Association will be held on Wednesday, 2nd December. WAIKATO RIVER BOARD. K! a meeting of the Waikato River Board was held on Saturday last. There wer? present: Messrs Glass (chairman), Gallery, Dean and Clephane. The usual formal business was gone through, and the customary fortnightly wages accounts passed for payment. Coriespondence was read concerning the £6OOO loan, which will be available tor the Board's use next January. In the meantime the overdraft stands at £1926, with a monthly increase of about £IOO. The Board directed its fngioeer, Mr Kennedy, to report upon the state of the river between Mercer and Rangiriri, with a view to imnroving it * or navigation. It is thought that the placing of two or thiee groynes may have a good effpet „non the channel. , it waß decided that the Board ghould accompany the engineer to-day /Tuesday) to pay a visit of inspection to all works on the river.
