The people of Maidstone (Kent) were '.aM month the victims of what bcli<ved to have been a " Koepenick " lioax.
A young man, in the uniform of a lieutenant, arrived at an hotel in the town, and stated that 6,(X)0 riflemen had orders to move on to Maidstono from Crew-borough Camp, and that iie had been sent on in advance to engage roonu> for officers.
The Mayor, on learning of the report, got into communication with the supposed lieutenant, and was informed it was true. On the following evening the l>eoplo of Maidstone turned out to wel(iiiii- ib.e troops. For hours dense irowds waited, but no troops arrived, and when inquiries were made at Crow. Ixirough a reply was received that nothing was known of any order to move to Maidstone.
Meanwhile, the " lieutenant" disappeared from the hotel without paying bis bill.
