The Waiuku Railway.
[TO THE EDITOR.]
Sir,—The issue of the "Times " of November Gth contained an account of the formation of a Chamber of Commerce for Waiuku. This is another instance of the progressive policy the loaders of public opinion in Waiuku have been noted for some time, and the people of Pukekohe, who admire the go-ahead public policy and appreciate public service, join in tendering congratulations to them on the success of the movement. But, Mr Editor, although glad of the opportunity to do so, and I assure them it is done in all sincerity, the object of my writing is to ask them to explain through the columns of your valuable paper what reads to the Pukekohe people like a very unfriendly and unneighbourly act. It is the feeling that prompted them to carry resolutions to support the Eailway League in protesting against the proposal to have the shunting station or terminus of the Waiuku railway at Pukekohe, and also to forward an emphatic protest to the Prime Minister, member for the district, against such scheme being given effect to. Now, Sir, we do not wish to appear unduly suspicious or ungenerous to our Waiuku friends, as there may be under-lying tne resolutions some urgent public utility or convenience to be served in which Pukekohe will be a participant, but if so we confess that they have kept it well in the background; therefore, in the face of the resolutions which appear to be a deliberate attempt to side-track Pukekohe, we are entitled to an explanation, and if a satisfactory one can be given, your Pukekohe readers will be delighted to have it. Failing such explanation the people of this town will naturally think their interests are being menaced, and ask our public bodies, the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce, to take such action as they think sufficient to protect those interests.— I am, etc., JAMES EOULSTON. Pukekohe.
