THE TELEPHONE SERVICE.

As soon as the subscribers to the local telephone bureau total fifty we understand the office is entitled to another assistant. It is only too evident that the present staff is somewhat overworked, and llio local telephone service suffers somewhat in consequence, or rather business people and others who use the 'phone have to suffer. During the past few days the Department's men have been busy installing additions to the service. The following 'phones are being installed : Mr Len. Barriball's residence, Barriball and Grimtaond's stables, Mr H. T. Bint's business premises, Bank of New Zealand, Mr D. J. Rowe's residence, Mr S. T. Rossiter's private residence and Mr E. J. Green's business premises. These installations will increase the number of subscribers to 47. When the 50 has been secured Waiuku can then get an Sto 8 service. One or two others are contemplating installing, and a private wire with three or four subscribers is hoped to eventuate shortly. As a telephone service from 8 in the morning until 8 in the evening would be a great benefit to the district it is very desirable that a few more subscribers be secured.
