TUAKAU SOUTH.

THE TENNIS SEASON.

Last Saturday, the <l!st October, was quite > gala day on tbe Domain, it being tbc occasion of the opening ot the Domain Club'a tennis season, also a combination picaic by the Tennis Club and tbe Domain Board in honour of the occasion of opening a new pavilion. Over two hundred were present, and a feature ot the gathering was the number of children present, there beiug over a hundred.

The grounds were in splendid order owing to the assiduous care and attention of Air Collins, and ths newly-plaited flower beds give promise of a splendid show later oo| The shrubs, which aie mostly deciduoua, looked beautiful in their spring verdure, and the gay colours of the children's frocka playing around them lint a colour to a sc»ne which for a country district's recreation ground would be hard to beat.

'the chairmsn of the Board, Mr H. McGuire, in a neat little speech gave a brief resume of the history of the ground, which uaed to be (he camping ground for (he pioneer settlers, and it was through tbeir foresight and influence that the Government of the day handed it over to the people tor future geoera* tions. The Board, he said, bad for some time bon hampered for fundi, but now matters in that reipett were improving he iatimited that improvements were going to be carried out as funds permitted, and that the pavilion which they had built, with some assistance from tbe Tennis Club, was but • beginning. The building, which reflected credit upon Mr L<n Logan, the contractor, waa provided with a water service and a dressingroom for the ladies. Mr McGuire concluded his remarks by calling upon Mr E. C. Frost to say a few words on behalf of the Tennie Club.

Mr Frojt, in a few words, congratulated the Board and tbc Club upon their enterprise, and hoped that the people would appreciate what was being done for them. He then called upon Mr Collins, aenr., to serve the first ball over the net and declared the court open for the season.

A pleasant note st the gathering was, that while all were enjoying themselves without fear of molosta* tion from cnemivs, the strickeo peiple in Belgium were not forgotten, and a contribution was made towards tbe relief fund which will be supplemented by the Tennis Club and handed to the Belgian Consul. Tbe court wsa handed over to the visiting players for the afternoon, and many interesting seta were played. The catering was in the bands of Mr Prescott, who carried the work of this department ojt in bis usual satisfactory msnner.
