GOVERNMENT GRANTS.

Wanted by County Council, Wire to Prime Minister. At Thursday's mooting of the tranklin County Council an important discussion was opened by Cr Flanagan who said that in the Estimate* ho had road with consternation that the grant of £. f >oo for the Groat South road, Morcor to Raugiriri, was subject to £ for £ subsidy. Whoro was this £SOO to como from ? Thero was also tho promised subsidy for Pratt's hill deviation, £2500 at £ for £, for which there waa not a ponny on the Estimates. On tho strength of the Government taking over tho South road with tho main roads genorally, or at least making liberal grants, a lot of work had been done. The metal had actually beon paid for and they would be " swamped " if thero was no straight-out grant. Cr ltenall: Did you not havo a good lot of grants last your'( Cr Flanagan : Yes, but wo want it every year. Several spawling contracts havo boon lot and we havo paid considerable amounts on those, tie suggested that an urgent wiro should be sent to tho Prirno Ministor about the mattor.

Cr Renall : You seo 1 got nothing last year and that is why I have jrot so much this year.

Cr Campbell supported Cr Flanagan. Ho wanted £SOO for Hunua main road. Cr Wilcox said tho Boach road, Tuakau, had to carry all tho traffic of tho Government tenants from whom tho Oovernmont derivod rovenuo ; it would take half the rates from tho wholo of Pukekoho East to lcoop up that road alono. Ho certainly thought thoy should ask for a grant for Beach road. Cr Henry said if tho Council was going to support one riding it should support others and ho putin a claim lor throo works (which woro subsequently incorporated in tho tologram)

After some further oousideiation it was decided as follows :

" That a telegram bo Bont to tlio Prime Minister urging that iu framing tho Supplementary Estimates provision bo made for the following at least out of grants previously applied for Drury riding, Pratt's hill deviation, £2500, £ for £ ; Drury to Mercer, Groat South road, £SOO ; Mauku rid.ng, McPherson's bridge, £SOO £ for £ ; Straight road, Patumahoo to Waiau, £250 ; Woodhouso creek road, to Ostrich farm, £l5O ; Ilunua riding, Hunua main road, £SOO ; Mercer riding, Enoch's deviation to Maramarua, Maungatawhiri Valley, £ for £, £IOO j Beach road, Tuakau, £IOO. It is the unanimous opinion of the Council that these grants are absolutely indispensiblo as it is impossible to carry out tho works specified from the rates."
