"We nothing extenuate, nor let down aught in malic.e
At the impending elections for the Franklin County Council there are to be contests in Awhitu. Pukekohe, Mercer, Mauku, Waipipi and Waiuku ridings. Drury has done the sitting member, Cr J. Flanagan, the well-deserved honour of returning him unopposed. Cr Campbell is not again offering himself and by his retirement Hunua suffers a distinct loss. If Mr T. J. Lockwood, who has been elected unopposed, does as much for his riding as his predecessor did Hunua will have no cause for complaint. In Awhitu tho contestants are the sitting councillor, Mr J. A. Renall, and Mr W. G. Hamilton. Cr Renall has never spared himself in working for his constituency, and we expect him to be returned. We are at a disadvantage in not knowing Mr Hamilton personally, so that we cannot refer to the merits of that gentleman. In Waipipi, Cr Motion is being opposed by Mr W. L. West; in Waiuku, Cr E. Higginson has Mr ,T. D. Chalmers out against him; and in Mercer, Mr IJ.1 J . A. Kelly is in the contest against Cr R. Lyons. We have not had the opportunity of seeing any of the work of the new candidates but we can say without hesitation that the three sitting members have all dono splendid service for their respective ridings. In Pukekohe, there are three candidates for the two seats. Cr Wilcox has a record of usefulness behind him which is sure to stand him in good stead, and Mr T. W. Woods, whose service on the Pukekohe West Road Board was much appreciated, is certain to receive a sweeping vote. The other candidate is Mr J. Tooman, formerly of the Pukekohe East Road Board. If the votes go the way the "talk" is going Messrs Wilcox and Woods will be the representatives of the Pukekohe riding. Perhaps the hottest contest will be for the Mauku seat, where the sitting member, Cr Henry, has as his opponent Mr J. Batty. It is a matter for congratulation that so much interest is being shown in our local governing affairs, and in view of the quality of the candidates offering themselves it is certain that the Council which will be selected at the polls will be a distinct credit to the county.
