Mr John Torrous Btovonsou, F.R.A.8., died at tho residence of liis sister, Mrs E. Rooso, ui' l'ukokolio, on Saturday, aftor a short illness. Deceased was tilt yoars of ago, uuuiarriod, tho third son of tho late Mr David Stevenson, aud arrived in Auckland about 50 yoars ago. Mr Stevenson was an accountant l>y profession, but the study of astrouomy was his tavourito pursuit, and for many yoars ho forwarded roliablo oathor forecasts to the l're>s. Of a very retiring nature, Mr Stovonson to some oxtont hid his ability as an astronomer, and often made private prognostications of volcanic disturbances, which his nervousness prevented him from makiug public. An instance of this was the oarthuiiako at Messina, which ho forotolu to within two days of its actual occurrence. His guide for those prognostications was the position of the moon and certain planets at a particular dato over a certain portion of tho weaker section of the earth's crust.
