NEW TOWN BOARDS.
Adjustment of Accounts
With Franklin County Council.
On Wednesday the members of the Franklin County Council met the Town Board Commissioners of Waiuku and Tuakau to arrange a settlement of the affairs between the County Council and the newlycreated Town Boards. THE WAIUKU SETTLEMENT. Commissioners E. T. Eeid, H. 0. Mellsop, J. Gribble, J. Walters, A. M. Barriball, with their clerk (Mr W. J. King) represented the Waiuku Town Board. The different points of settlement were discussed from various points of view, but the proceedings were of a most amicable nature. The agreement arrived at was as follows : 1. That the old Head Board office be available for the Town Board's use; the Town Board to keep the office in good order and repair. 2. That the Town Board take over the full control and responsibility of all roads within the Town Board area. 3. That the Town Board collect the special rates, due on the various loans, on the property within the Town Board area, and pay the same to the County on or before January Ist in each and every year during the currency of the several loans. 4. That the current County rate for the Waipipi portion of the Town Board, less cost of collecting, be handed to the Town Board. 5. That the current County rate for the Waiuku portion of the Town Board, less a proportionate part of the overdraft owing by the Waiuku Eoad Board at time of merger, be handed to the Town Board. 6. Application is to be made for an Order-in-Council delegating to the Waiuku Town Board full control of the roads and the responsibility of making" and keeping in order all the roads within the Town Board area of Waiuku. In this Order-in-Council it is proposed that the plevious five resolutions should be incorporated. AGREEMENT WITH TUAKAW. Commissioners Dynes Fulton, J. H. Craig, J Pirret, Capt. Eyder, H. B. Free, W. A. Strahan and W. Glasgow, with their clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper), were present in the interests of the Tuakau Board. Again in this case a mutually satisfactory agreement was made. 1. The Town Board to have control of and the full responsibility of making and keeping in order and repair all the roads within the Town Board area. 2. That the Town Board collect the special rates due on the various loans on the property within the Town Board area, and pay the same to the County, on or before the first day of January in each and every year during the currency of the said loans. 3. That the Government subsidy of £540 on loan loan money be retained by the County, and to be applied in reduction of the liabilities of the Tuakau Town Board area, being monies paid out of general account to complete work. The Counoil to complete Bollard's road works, such works not to exceed the approximate estimate of £IOO. 4. Subject to the foregoing, that the current County rate for the Town Board area be handed to the Town Board as collected, less cost of collection. Application is to be made for an Order-in-Council incorporating the foregoing resolutions, and giving Tuakau Town Board power to strike their own rates and have control of their own affairs. When the matter came before the County Council for confirmation, at Thursday's meeting, the chairman (Mr Motion) said he thought it best that the Boards should be given control of their areas. Cr. Campbell expressed satisfacfaction at the pleasing and amicable feeling that existed on both sides. The chairman said there was some uncompleted work on the other side of the Waiuku Bridge. "The Council would have had to complete the work," said Mr Motion, " but as we are handing over the money the Board should do the work themselves. However, I agreed to allow the County engineer to lay off the work for the Board." Cr. Henry pointed out that in connection with a request from his riding previously the Council had laid down the policy that the services of the engineer were not to be given gratuitously. The Karaka Eoad Board might say that if they were refused other people should be refused also. It was again pointed out that this case was different, as it was a matter of completing work already begun. The agreements were then duly confirmed.
