♦ The organiser for the Franklin Liberal League gives notice that a meeting is to be held in the Masonic Hall on Thursday next to "officially" select the Opposition candidate to contest th 3 Franklin constituency. A reminder is given of the soiree and children's entertainment to be held in the Masonic Hall, Pukekohe, on Thursday evening uext, October 29th, under the auspices of St. Audrew's Ladies Guild. The Post Office advises that regis- I tered inland code addresses will now I be accepted for inland telegrams. It would seem that parts of Pukekohe other than the Hill are able to grow potatoes well. Mr Carroll, whose property is near the Ostrich farm, has been exhibiting some tine specimens of this staple article in Mr Askew's window, thus showing that be is upholding the honour of Paerata side of Pukekohe. Last week the old and wellknown mare Pretoria, belonging (o the Koulston estate, died at foaling. Pretoria was by Cuirassier from Winnie. Winnie was the founda- j lion mare of the Belmont stud. Pretoria was never raced, having been injured as a youngster. But that good judgment was exercised in reserving her fcr stud purposes was shown by her splendid progeny, including the famous Soultoria, Delegate, Te Coma and Beauvardia. Pretoria's foal, a filly by Marble Arch, is doing well under the care of a foster mother. Supporters cf the Opposition Party in the Franklin electorate have selected Mr A. G. C. Glass, of Te Kauwhata, as the Opposition candidate to oppose the Prima Minister. At the elections of 1908 and 191], Mr Massey's opponent was Mr J. W. McLarid, who has on this occasion received official nomination as Opposition caid'date for Manukau, against the Hon. F. W. Lang, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mr Glaes a well-known farmer in the Waikato, and like Mr Maisey was one of the first members of the Farmers' Union, for which he was also the first organiser in the Auckland Province. Mr Glass is now best kr,o*n as chairman of the Waikato River Boarc*.
