DISTRICT NEWS.
TUAKAU. TOWN BOARD. The Tuaksu Town Board met in committee on Tuesday to consider the drawing up ot by-lawa. The meeting, which was a lengthy one, did not get through with its task and waß accordingly adjourned until Tuesday next. TENNIS SOCIAL. The second of the fortnightly socials arranged by the Tuakau Tennis Club was held on Wednesday evening and was even better attended than the first. Music waß provided by the recently-formed Tuakau orchertra—Mies Mayall, piano; Mr Nolan, violin; Mr Collins, cornet. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies, the proceedings terminating at midnight. PERSONAL. I gather from Native Constable Moore, when passing through Tuakau on Thursday, that hs was juat getting over a very severe illness, necessitating two operations. His medical adviser suggests that he should rest for another two or three weeks, but Constable Moore hopes to resume duty in Tuakau next week. During the local constable's absence Constable Willcocks, from Pukekohe, ' has visited Tuakau, but his duties have been such that it has been impossible to give our district the,necessary attention. BOMBAY. A FAUEWELL SOCIAL. On Friday evening, October 23rd, a social was held in the Bombay hall, conjointly by the Farmers' Union and the directors of the Hall Company, to farewell their secretary, Mr Webster, who has sold his farm and is leaving the district. Mr Thomas, president of the Farmers' Union*, was in the chair, and Mr H. J. Flay, tbe chairman of the hall directors, was vice-chair-man. Short addresses and musical items were given by several of those present, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr C. V. PI Iking ton succeeds Mr Webster as secretary of the Faimers' Union and Mr G. Scott as secretary to the hall directors. CRICKET. On Saturday, October 24th, the cricket season was opened, when a match Married v. Single was played in Mr Broughton's paddock, and resulted in a win for tbe Married by 2 runs—Married 40, Single 38, one innings. The top scorers in tbe Married were: W. Evans, junr., 7, A. Best, 7 F. Wilsun 7, extras 11. Single: A. Cornthwaite 16, L. Balme 4, extras 8. BowlingMarried: A. Clark 6 for 15, A. Beat 2 for 4. Single: A. Cornthwaite 5 for 15, D. Blake 2 for 14. • RUNCIMAN. PLEASANT GUILD GATHERING. A pleasant and happy little gathering of the junior portion of the working guild in connection with home miSßonß met at tbe residence of Mr J. Dickson, Runci* man, on Saturday afternoon. The function took the form' of a garden party, and business was pleasantly combined with pleasure. A review of tbe past year's work disclosed a very successful result and it was decided to continue this good work. The Presbyterian church is to be congratulated in possessing such a willing and energetic band of workers as these girls have proved to be. AKA AKA. DRAINAGE BOARD ELECTION. We are again on the point of an election for members of the Aka Aka drainage district. For the live seats there are six candidates, namely, Messrs E. T. Bent, 8. P. Henry, R. Hudson, G. G. Hull, J. N. Massey and S. N. West. The polling takes place on Monday next, November 2nd. Houis of polling, etc, are advertised.
