WAIKATO RIVER WORKS
The Engineer's Inspection
After hi 3 inspection Mr C. D. Kennedy, the Boaid's consulting engineer, reported as f .Hows: - "1 beg tu report having just returned from inspecting the willow (raining wall?, constructed near Kaitangata. The work, under Overseer Sellare, H progressing satisfactorily. The cost will be within my original estimate; given in my firEt report (£lO per chain) and the result up to my expectations. Ihe stream is easily diverted and the bed of the river deepens readily in response to the scour caused by the training walls. There is now good reason to conclude that dredging can be dispensed with. Aa this item increased the estimated expenditure by over £15,000 the saving is substantial* At the present rate of progress 1 look forwaid, with a further expenditure ot £ISOO, to an appreciable difference in the low water level as far aj Kaitacgata taking place within Ins months. Thej plant is in fair order. Piledriving is getting ahead of the willow work; I recommend thai extra men he employed to push on the latter wo:k and keep both moving along together."
We understand that Mr Kennedy has r.ow arranged to lay off the work towards the Tuakau bridge, cutting off all the double channels. It is believed that the work will be very inexpensive, viz., anchoring large willows and white pine rickers to piles, both willow and white pine, and lashing the whole together.
