»» PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. A meeting of the committee and collectors of tbe Patriotic League was held on Thursday evening and was well attended. The Secretary (Mr Murray) announced that £144 5s 2UI had already 'been collected : £IOO was sent to the Defence Department, £lO to the Waikato fund, and the remainder being banked. During the month of September the ladies of the league collected the following sum?:—For local distress, £;! lis Sd ; to assist the defence fund, £S lls 2d; and a donation of Is from Mrs A. Dixon. It was decided to piy tho balance of £OO from tho Patriotic League in'o tho defence fund. The Patriotic League has in hand £ll 14s Sd, and £0 lis 8d is to be used for local distress The Oddfellows of Papakura donated tho sum of £6 from their social to the Papakura patriotic fund for the use of local distress. All collectors were added to the League committee. It was decide 1 that a sub-commit-tee be foimed, c< nsisting of the chairman, treasurer, secretary, and Mrs Jones and Mrs Dixon, to make inquiries in cases of local distress. It was also decided to hold monthly meetings of the League, the date to bo arranged by tho chairman. A letter was read from the Pit. Hon. W. F. Massey, P. 0., Prime Minister, acknowledging the £IOO which was sent to the defence fund. Tho secretary was also authorised to bank £OO, which brings the amount up to £IOO. LAWN TENNIS. . The opening of the Papakura tenuis lawns for this season took place on Saturday afternoon. There was a largo attendance of visitors and members The Rev. 1). Madill, a vice-president, in a tactful lit tie speech, de.hred the lawus open fur play. Delicious afternoon tea was provided by the lady members. Next Saturday the first association match of the season takes place at Brookby.
