TENNIS CLUB. The Tuakau Club'B ttiiuis courts were formally opered in Wednesday by the president, Mr A. Madfll. Notwithsianding the somewhat boisterous weather a large gathering assembled, ineludirg visiting plajera from Auckland and Onewhero. In formally declaring the courts open for play. Mr Madill said that it gave him great pleasure to be with the Club that afternoon. Tennis, besides being splendid recreation, was one of the moat inr.ucent and harmless forms of sport. He lived close at hand and could testify to (he excellent way that eveiy member of the Club conducted themselves. After making humorous references to the bachelors of the club Mr Madill handed the secretary a £1 note as a donation to the Club funds. During the afternoon the ladies dispensed excellent refreshments. Play continued until it was too dark to see a ball. TENNIS SOCIAL. In the evening the Tennis Club arranged a little social function with the idea of assisting the Club fur.ds. A considerable number tif players and their friends assembled in the hall and thoroughly enjoyfd the evening's entertainment. Music, dancing and cards were included on the programme, Refreshments were also provided. The Club funds will benefit to the extent of about £2 IDs. Mr Sid Collins acted as M.C. Music was provided by Miss Mayall, Messrs Stephenson and Tapper. As the weather is warmer than usual for the danciny season the committee desire that tennis costumes be worn at ensuiug socials. A PLEASANT COMPLIMENT. Men who enter public life expect to receive "more kicks than ha'pence." Therefore, it came as a surprise to the members of the Town Hoard on Tuesday night when the chairman announced that Mr A. Madill had handed him a box of cigars aB a present to the members. The chairman was deputed to thunK Mr Madill for his kindness, and members were not slow in "lighting up." The quality was excellent.
