j Engineer's Monthly Report, j At vest rday's meeting of the ' j Franklin County Council the county I tnginter, Mr J. F. McArthur, t I report d as follows:DEVIATION GREAT SOUTH j ROAD, BOMBAY. The engineering suivey ani drawing t'f trie above d viation has been i completed, the approximate otimate ! ot construction, culverts and fencing j b.iig £9500. The t ital l-:n«th of the diviation f;om p.here it leaves j the Gr:at South road st Ruttier- j ford's to th: point r,f i tersection ion the Pokino hill i; 4 miles 28 chain 1 ?. The gralea for the full length of (he deviation aie good with the exception of tha prriion on Pokeno hill, thia being for some , chaii.s lin 8.2. 1 lr.vestiga'.ed all | other possible route 3at this point j but found it impossible to obtain j an easier gradi'. The land required j to be taken within the one chain reserve for the full length n approximately 32 acre?, the following being the property owners, and the area required 1o ba taken from each:—Rutherford, 3.6 acresj Pilkington, 2 acres; Cornthwaite, 1.2 acre; Kettelwell, 1.2 acres; Parsonage, .65 acres; Proude, 5 acei; Wallace, 3.4 acreß; Hancock, 2.5 acres; Arnold, 1.8 acre?; Evans, 1.8 acres; Lees, 2 acres; Coombp, 5.2 acres; and Hayward, 2 acres. In addition to this it may be necessary to take further ares>a of land owing to severance. Attached is a drawing showing the longitudinal section and the different erade ot the whole length, 4 miles 28 chains. PUKEKOHE-BOMBAY ROAD. The contraator at present delivering stone on this road has made an offer to cart 170 cubic yards ot spawls now lying in Mr Lawrie's property, this stone is the property of the Council. The price tor carting would be 4s per yard. 1 would suggest that the off r be accepted, the stona being required for iepair. I'UKEKOHE-TUAKAU ROAD. Two contracts have now been completed on this rozd, one for forming 27 chains, ard the other for metalling. A further contract is in proves for Ue supply of 250 cubic jards of stone, being for that portion of the road opposite McFarland's. I would suggest that the formation of read at this piint be g'.ne on with, the approximate cost being £43. I might m:ntion that this ij the orlv unmetalled portion of the road between Pukckohe a:d luakau. Mr Ferguson has just completed crushing rretal on one of the abovementioned contracts, and offers to crush the 250 cubic jards of spawls, now ready, at 3s per yard. Mr Fc-guson's plant is now on the sit? of the works and 1 would suggest that the offer be accepted. PRICE AND ARARIMU DEVIATION. In company with Cr Flanagan I inspected the present road, and also the proposed deviation, and consider I hat the deviation is not necessarj. I have approached the Public Workj Department with a view to spending the availably grant of £2OO on the present road. This amount, it spent as suggested in lowering grades and widening the present road, would do all that is necessary. Should a deviation be mad?, it would te necessary to cay compensation for land, also fencing; the cost ef this I would estimate at about £l5O. This expenditure would have U come out of general account. The available grant would not complete the deviation. OLD RAILWAY RESERVE, BUCKLAND TO TUAKAU. At a meeting of ratepayers held at Tuakau on the 9th inst., at which your chairman, Mr Motion, Crs Fulton and Wilcox explained fully the offer made by the Railway Department. Atter some discussion a resolution was passed by the meeting authorising your Council to take the necessary steps to acquire the reserve at the Tuakau end. where it will be necessary to take extra land. Mr Henderson has generously offered to give some free of cost to your Council. WAIUKU-AWHITU ROAD. The survey of the new road has been completed and plans prepared. It is new necessary, before furth'r steps can be taken in the matter of legalising the road, to obtain consar.t of the different owners. The following is the area required to be taken from each:—J. A. Rcnall, 16 acres 2 ronds 30.5 perches; Jas. Given, 3 acres 3 roods 17.2 perches; F. McKay, 12 acres 1 rood 9 perches; making a totai of 32 acres 3 roods 16.7 torches. There are portions of old r,ads to he closed in Mr Renall'a property, the total area being 7 acres 0 roods 7.2 perches. WORKS LAID OUT DURING MONTH. Engineering surveys have been j I made during the mouth of the works ! on the differed roads as follows: ! Ponga road by I'laU's; 'Great South road, Papakura; MaraI marua road deviation; Maramarua to j Miranda deviation; deviation | Miranda-Margatangi road; portion j Jof Brown's hill deviation. The plan;- j j for these works are now in course ot j ] preparation. i CONTRACTS IN PROGRESS. I All contractors were written to ' giving them the option of suspending works for one month or doing without progress payments for two months. With one or two exceptions the contractors decided to continue the works. It *a3 found necessary to t ike this step owing to the nonpayment of monies due to this Coun- | cil by the Government. TENDERS. I would suggest that terders be invited, returnable at next meeting oT your Council, for: Contract No. 81—-Formirg and culverting 37 chains of the Git at South road at Rama Rama. Contract No. 82 For funning and culverting poitiom of Renall's I deviation, Waiuku-Awhitu road. Contract No. 8.".—10r the supply and delivery of 500 cubic yards of Gpawls, Tuakau Beach road. These works will be carried out under Government grant, the authoriI ties for expenditure having been • received. 1 might mention thai it will be | necessary to call tenders for further lots of stone on the WaiukuI'ukekohe road, as the quantit/ at present, ur.dtr contract will not bo : sufficient, to do the necessary repairs.
