THE TORA WHARF.
More Accommodation Needed.
Through Cr Kenall a petition wrs received at the last meeting of the Franklin County Council. The petitioners were T. A. Saunders H. Ashworth, C. Dickey, VV. Wetsie", W. Douglas, J. T. Dickey, F. A. Harcombe, J. Lever, T. Meiklc, A. GilloU, J. McEwen. Tney pointed out that f.r several past the shed accommodate n it Tora wharf had been quite inadequate for the requirem nts of K<;he Kohe settlers, with the result that a considerable Ijss occurred through go:ds beinß damaged by the weather. Ihe shed was lift by Bft. They asked for a grant of £25 towards the erectioi of a suitable shed in timber aud iron. The petitioners agieed to find the y lauour.
The cbaitman said the Council should say whether they were going to ask the Harbour Board to take over these wharves or whtther they should keep the maintenance themselves, Mr Gunson, chairman of the Harbour Board, said that Biard diJ not want control of the wharves but as a progressive body they would accept control if asked by the Council. Under the present arrangements the costs were paid out of the road rates; if the Beard had control the people usirg the wharves most would pay most. This Council was not permanently in charge of the whams, but only for •h2 ur.expired portion of the ttim arranged with the Marine Department. He recommended that the Board be asked to take control.
Cr Renall said they suffered a hardship with the shed accommodation. They bad £l3 to their credit on fe Tora whart from the shipping company, and it w.uld not be a great hardship on tne Council to do wnat these people asked. If the Harbour Board could do better he did not want the Council to keep control. But be th ught the Board had decided not to have anything to do with the wharves for three years. He moved, 1 hat the Council accede to tho request.
Cr Higginson moved, That the Harbour Board be asked to take over the managemefct of tfce whaives. He would like to know how long it had taken to get that £l3 credit; by the time they got another £l3 they would need a new wharf. On Waiuku wharf they always needed more muney than they could get. The motion was carried.
