BUCKLAND.

FARMERS' UNION.

The nmiti 1/ meeting of the liuckland branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Unioi was hld in the htll on Saturday evening, August Blh. There were sixteen members present.

Amongst the correspondence was a circular letter from the Opotiki branch, in which they asked to be fupported in the following lesolutions: (1) That the Government b? j asked to au borise a special railway construction loan for the East Coast railway, Nap'er to Aucklanl, including the Paerengaroa-Rotorua connection, so as to enable the whole work to be completed in seven years; (2) that the way of dealing with (especially maize and chaff sacks) is unsitisfactorv, as the sacks should ba allowed for; (3) that sheep should be sold by weight. 'lhe meeting dscidcd to support the first two resolutions; the third being very vague, the secretary was instructed to obtain more information concerning it. The executive of the Auckland Provincial Union sent a copy of a number of resolutions passed at a special meeting held on Tuesday, August 4th. The resolutions were as follows:—"That the Government be assured of the Executive's desire to assist in any direction in which the Farmers' Union organisation could ba of service in the [resent crisis, and also of the willingness of the Auckland farmers in the province to make any sacrifice in the interests of the Empire, and at the same time to express confidence that the Government would recognise the wisdom of not hampering the agricultural interests more than might be absolutely receeeary in any steps it might take in the wav of calling up territorials"; "that it is probabU that one of the chief m°ans by which the Dominiou can assist the Empire in time of war is by producing the foodstuffs and fodder needful, the Government be asked to obtain reliable information as to what lines would be of moßt service with a view of eac'uuraging the production of those lines within the Dominion."; "that the Executive is of ODinion that it is essential in order to minimise the dangers of the present crisis that tha Governor-m-Council should have power to declare that all mortgages falling dus be automatically extended until the crisis is past." It was decided to support the Auckland Executive. On the motion of Mr Melville a resolution was passed putting a levy of two shillings on eaob member, the levy to be paid to the secretary aod then forwarded on to the Auckland Executive, who were to be instructed to use it to the best advantage of alleviating the sufferings of the wives and children of thore in distress through the late lamentable strike. The motion was the outcome of a similar move made by the Mauku branch, a full report of which appeared in the "Times."

Mr Kelson was elected a member of the local branch. A committee was set up to promote a farewell social to Mr J. Tilly, who has soli his farm and is going to reside at Tauranga. Mr Driver read an essay on the making of ensilage, which contained some very instructive information.
