KARAKA ROAD BOARD.

August Meeting.

There were present at Saturday's meeting : Messrs Batty (diaiiwuir, Glasson, Schlaepfer and button. The chairman reported that he had made arrangements with a good man, who would find his own loadmaking plant, at £5 a week. Ho believed they would find that they could do the work as cheaply by day labour as by contract, and, further, there was the advantage they could start as soon as the wcathor was sufficiently fine. The ehairman was authorised to start work as soon as possible.

casey's quarry

Members agreed that the opening of Casey's quarry would be a great benefit to the district. During the past month the chairman had let a contract to Barraclough and Rhodes for 3000 yards of spawls, the price being for the first 1000 yards 3s 7d per .yard, for the remainder 3s 6d per yard. A tramway was to be built, the cost being £l2 lOs in addition to materials. An engine was to be bought and shed erected. It was provided that the first 600 yards were to be ready by December Ist and another 500 y»rds on February Ist. The cost of the tramway, engine, etc., would be £l5O. The chairman considered the move a wise one as they would be able to put the metal into drays at about os 6d per yard. It was computed that the output of the plant would be 60 yards a day and they could cope with this. They might be able to dispose of the balance of the 3000 yards to the County Council. He had no doubt that in the long run the County Council would assist them and possibly take over the quarry. Mr Sutton asked if, in view of the war, the Board would get their loan money ? The chairman : We can't be 6ure of anything now. The Government had sanctioned the loan, the Board had the debentures, and when the Board send these in they would expect the money. He saw no reason why the Board should not get the money. ROADS. The Board sanctioned the clearing of Herd's and Ferry roads by day labour, further work in opening up these roads to be considered at next meeting. It was resolved to take steps for opening up the road from the proposed bridge at Glasson's creek past Lindsay's to Waiau.

CLOSED ROADS. Messrs Johnston and Glasfon were appointed to value the 5.V acres included in the road running through a part of the Karaka Land Co. and which the Board recently closed. It is the intention of the Board t j sell this land. STEVENS* HILL. Mr Sutton mentioned that Mattson on his return to attend to Stevens' road, would carry out the expenditure of £2O sanctioned by the Board for improvements to Stevens' hill. KIDIXU BOUNDARIES. The chairman reported on the result of his interview with the County Council regarding the proposed alteration of the riding boundaries. " Fori! MILE " 11IUDGE.

Reference was made to the dangerous condition of the " FourMilo " bridge on the Drury-Waiuku road. Several ratepayers had complained to members that only a loose plank had been put down. The clerk was instructed to draw the attention of the County Council to this matter and ask for immediate attention.

DATE. The chairman gave notice to move at the next meeting that a general rate of Jd in the £ be struck. This amount will include the rate for interest on loan. During the discussion which ensued Mr Schlaepfer thought the Board should take steps to see that the County Council spent " our rates here."

The chairman said he had suggested to the County Council on several occasions that they supplement the Board's expenditure of loan money on the main road so as to improve the grades. They would not, however, agree to this. Members thought it a great pity ✓as it would have proved an economical step for the ratepayers and further would have had the bridges repaired.

hussky'S lIIM,. Mr Sutton reported he had ordered a track to be cut up the side of Hussey's Hill, which at present was in an impassable state. IKKKY 11UAI'. Mr S. Falls waited on the Board to ask that something be done to the Ferry road between Urquhart's and his property. In the discussion which ensued it was mentioned that the cost would be probably £IOO, but it might be reduced if a deviation could be secured. The chairman and Mr Glasson were appointed to meet Mr Falls on the ground and report at next meeting.
