THE EUROPEAN WAR.
WAIUKU i'ATKIOTISM. (i'ii:o a number uf members uf the local mounted squadron and exterritorials have uduntoen'd for active seivice. Early this wo-dt it was announced that four had successfully passed the necessary tests and were accented. These are SergtMajor Cobourne, Sergeant Palmer, Corporal McDonald and Private A. S. Barribali, and it is expected that they will shortly be c die I up. Area Sergt.-Major Milne, who was ixpected to go in command ol a no;them squadron, was much disappointed on Monday when advised that the unmarried men were being given preference for the expeditionary force. It is thought very ptobable, however, that his services will be necessary, if there are insufficient oilicers of his rank available for the expedition. It is also very probable that Captain AUred will be among the party. A number of others wdio have offered 'heir service* are very hopeful that they will be required. There is a good deal of the patriotic spii it in evidence locally, and there is a widespread feeling that all who leave the distiict should be fully equipped without any expense to themselves or the Government. Mr W. C. Motion offered a hor.-e, Mr J. Urihble donated a military saddle, and other similar gifts ate certain to lie the outcome of the public meeting arranged by the Farmers' Union for Wednesday evening.
