RIDING BOUNDARIES.
Karaka Question Re-opened
At Thursday's meeting of the Franklin County Council, Mr Batty, chairman of the Karaka Road Board, waited on the Council again in connection with the proposal to transfer No. 1 ward in the Karaka road district from the Mauku riding and add it to Drury riding. Mr Batty presented three petitions : one from the ratepayers in No. 1 ward who were desirous of being retained in the Mauku riding, the second from lj or 16 "live" ratepayers who were improving their properties, and the third from people of the district who were interested in railing from Rnnciman sta'ion.
Mr Batty did not read the petitions but explained their contents. The petitions were handed to Cr Flanagan, and for the moment we are unable to publish their c.ntents. The chairman said he was pleased to see that they had something definite now to go on. Cr Fulton : 1 thought the matter was practically settled. Cr Henry moved, That the matter be reconsidered. When the resolution was cdrried against hioi at the last meeting, and against the wishes of the ratepayers affected, ho considered the action arbitrary and would serve no good purpose. He thought that Mr Batty was quite within his rights in getting these petitions, and the Council would not lie doing its duty unless it acceded to the request contained in them. Cr Campbell agieed to postpone his proposal to move for an Order-iu-Council until next meeting so a* to allow of reconsideration.
Cm Flanagan and Campbell were asked as to whether they were likely to agree about the matter finally. Cr Flanagan : At the next meeting I won't keep you live minutes and it will boT-ettlul then as far as I am concerned.
Cr Heury : Hear, hear. Cr Flanagan said he desired to go into these petition- before finally deciding. It was agreed to let tho matter stand over until tho next meeting, the petitions meanwhile being referred to Crs Flanagan and Henry.
