THE WAIUKU RAILWAY.
Works in Progress. Although only aUout two m nths have elapsed sinre co-.atruction works were started on the branch railway, corsiderable progress haa already been made. Ihe principal work so far b bein* done at the head of Slade's lake by a cooDerative about 50 Here sotr,e extensive works are in progress, and cuttings and fillings are the order of the Cay.
Temporary tram lir.es are laid into the cutting, and two s°lftipiling trucks arj used to carry the mullock from the face to the tipbrad. A horje draws these trucks and as fast as one is emptied anothsr is ready to be taken off. Already a small township haa sprung up around the works, cimprbins; a blacksmith's shop, carpenter's shop and store room, as well as the various whares and tsnt3 of the workmen. As well as the co-orerative works three contract?) have been let which will be started almost immediately. No. 1 contract, of 39 chains, the teuder of Mr D. Crowley has been accepted; and for No. 2 snd 3 contracts, a distance of 1 mila 58 chains, Mr A. J. Mcore, of f'atumahoe, has been succe?sful. The latter contract passe? throuch Messrs Jacob Schlaepfer's, Dale's, and blade's properties, and will connect with the co-operative section at blade's.
Some further work b in picgress near Paerata and some concrete culverts are bsing pat in before t'.e earthwork is started.
