MAUKU - DRURY RIDINGS.

The Boundary Dispute.

Karaka Road Board's Opposition.

The members of the Karaka Road Board have always strongly dissented from tha proposal of the Franklin County Council to include in the Drury riding that portion of the No. 1 ward which includes Kunciman. The discussion at the recent County Council meeting, when interviewed by tha deputation, was referred to at Saturday's meeting of the Board

The chairman, after briefly outlining the position, aaid he understood that in spite of the deputation's protest the Council would transfer practically the whole of No. 1 ward to the Drury riding. There were a certain number of their ratepayers whose properties were in Drury township who desired to be put in the Drury riding, and the Board was perfectly willing to let them go. From the start it had been agreed that this area should be transferred. But there were a large numbjyr of ratepayers residing in and around Runciman who were strongly opposed to coming into Drury riding, and he considered it was the Board's duty to assist these people. The Board should do all they could to retain this territory. Pressure should be brough* to bear upon the Council and nothing would have more weight than a petition of the ratepayer*. He wai confidtnt that the ratepayers, not only of the portion in dispute in No. 1 ward, but of the outside districts, which use Runciman as their outlet, were almost unanimous in their opposition to the change. As the alteration of the boundaries would have absolutely no effect in reducing the work of the ' county officials or councillors. he thought that the Council would attach some impurtance to and be guided by the wishes of the rafpayers affected and interested. Mr Sutton considered it was to the Council's interest to leave Runciman alone.

After discussion as to the be it steps to take in the matter, it was resolved to take around a petition asking that the Council accept Bremner's road as the boundary between the Mauku and Drury ridings.
