THE Pukekohe and Waiuku Times PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS TUESDAY, JULY 14, 1914

LOCAL AND GENERAL.

" We nothing extenuate, nor get down auaht in malice

Several very forward and promising crops of onions are noticeable on the Hill. The Waiuku branch of the Pakuranga Hunt Club are meeting in Waiuku township on Thursday, at 11.30 a.m. Mr F. Brown, utationmaster at Pukekohe, who is at present on leave, was a passenger on Sunday night by the Main Trunk express for Wellington.

The Pukekohe Gun Club are holding their "big sfcoot ' to-day, and this evening are giving a smoke concert in the Masonic hill. Tomorrow a match is being fired with Karangahake. The meeting of the Parliamentary Union in the Oddtellows' hall on ihursday night should provide an interesting debate. The Land Bill will be proceeded with, and will pTobably come in for some keen criticism.

Several consignments ot trucks, rails, etc., have recently arrived at Pukekohe and Taerata stations en route for the construction works on the Waiuku railway. Some of the rails that arrived this week came from as far afield as the Otira tunnel. Th2 portions of plant are being carted out to Beloe's where the works are in progress. Great difficulty was experienced in getting some of the weighty trucks on to a waggon, the bottom of the vehicle being stove through. On Friday ten members of the Farmers' Class at the Pukekohe Technical School, accompanied by Mr D nnan, the instructor, paid a visit to the Waerenga Farm. They were cordially rec?ived and shown around the farm by the manager, Mr Shepherd, and in the course of the day picked up much useful and P'actical information. At the conclusion of the day Mr Flanagan, on behalf of the party, after dealing with the lessons to b<i learnt on such a visit, expressed appreciation of the gooi work being done on the farm, and moved a vote of thanks to Mr Shepherd. The return trip was made on the Roforua express, which slopped to pick the party up. Mr C. Cooper, of Cooper and Curd, supplied a "Times" representative with the frllowing illustration of the benefit of wide tyres. A metal contractor went across some paddocks with three waggons full of metal. The first waggon had 5 inch tyres and hardly made a mark on the grass. The second waggon followed Immediately behind and had 4 inch tyres, and left wheel tracks about 1£ inches in te sward. The third waggon had 2£ inch tyres, and its wheels went in about 4 inches and necessitated an extra horse. So satisfied was the contractor with the result that he Is sending ths two narrow tyred vehicles in to be furnished with 5 inch tyres.

Mr H. E. Pacey, manager N.Z. Dairy Association, visit d this district last week and held meetings at several of the centres. Notwithstanding the bad state of the roads, Mr Parey came through cn Thursday afternoon by motor and got as far as Buckland, where the motor got bogged. It took till Friday afternoon to extricate it. Another vehicle was obtained, and meetings were addressed at Whangarata on Thursday and Te Huua on Friday morning, Buckland in the afternoon and Pukekohe in the evening. On Saturday morning a run was taken out to Waipipi, ar.d on the letum journey in the afternoon a meeting was addressed at Patumahoe.
