WAIUKU.
ASSESSMENT COURT
A sitting of the Assessment Court to consider objections against the rocont valuations in Awliitu and Waipipi districts was held at tlio Courthouse, Waiuku, last Friday. Mr F. V. Fra/er, S.M., presided, and Mr E. Allan 'of Buckland' was assessor for the Government Valuation Department. Mr Crott,y represented the County Council as assessor for Awliitu riding, nnd Mr 11. E. R. L. Wily was assessor for Waipipi. Mr E. R. Morgan district valuer) was also in attendance in support of the values made by his Department, There were seven objectors to tho values set up in Awhitu riding and three in Waipipi district. All the objections were struck out, there being no appearance of plaintiffs.
The Magistrate then said he must congratulate Mr Morgan on the exceedingly good results of his valuations. The fact that nobody had turned up to object showed that the valuations must have been satisfactory, and that they had been conducted remarkably well. FARMERS' UNION.
The montb'y meeting of the Waiuku branch of the Farmers' Union was held last Friday, Mr Hodgkinson presiding and about a dozen members present. In the secretary's absence Mr Syd. West acted in that capacity. Various matters of interest were discussed, including a letter from Northern Steamship Co. refusing to put launch back to carry passongers from Sandspit wharf when stoanier could not berth at Waiuku wharf. Tho company enclosed a copy of a letter 6ent to the Harbour Board urging thorn to dredge a swinging basin at Waiuku. The company stated that until this was dono passengers would have to bo landed at the Sandsp : t.—Letter received. Tho delegates to tho Auckland conference gave a short account of the most important discussions eventuating there and remits passed. The pioposal in somo parts of New Zealand to form a Farm Labourers' Union and apply for an award received considerable attention, and it was unanimously agrood by all present that farms would not be workable with hired labour under an award, as the farmer could not regulate the price of his products like, the factory manager, and if necessary a meeting of farmers will be cal'ed and an association formed to take combined effort to combat the granting of such an award.
The Waiuku branch now being the largest branch in the Province it was decided to hold a dinner to celebrate the fact and tho following coninrttee were appointed to make preparations etc., for a function di'ring August. The President, Secretary, and Messrs 11. 0. Mellsop, W. Smith, C. Hosking and R. James.
A few questions wore asko.l and discussion followed upon Phosphate manuring and soil analysis, and those present are looking forward to a leaflet on the former which the Government are expected to shortly publish. WAIUKU TO WN DISTRK ,T. Word has been received by Mr Hanna, under date of July 2(lth from the Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, that the constitution of the Waiuku Town district, with boundaries as recommended by the Commissioner, has been approved. All that now remains to complete the matter is for the publication of the Governor's Proclamation in the Ga/ette.
There appears to be some doubt as to whether tho tirst Board will be nominated in the Proclamation, or whether an election will be necessary. A further reply on this point is being awaited from the Department. THE MISSING LAUNCH. With the return of tho Government steamer Tutanekai from an extensive cruise in search of the missing fishing launch Andrew, having covered 7000 sea miles since leaving Wellington on her mission, Mr A. Nicholson, of Waipipi, considers that everything possible has been done by the Government in the soarch for his son, who was one of the two men aboard the Andrew when she was driven seaward 6omo weeks ago during a heavy galo. Mr Nicholson is <juito satisfied that the Government has done all that could be dono in the mattor. WATER DIVINING.
Tho Rev. Mason, water diviuor, prospected over Mr Bishoffs property a few days ago with tho object of locating water on behalf of tho Dairy Association He was accompied by Mr Spragg chairman of directors), and Mr S. Morris, of Pukekohe. A good supply of water is assured on tho section under offer by Mr Bishoff to tho Dairy Association. Tho selection of this section, over which the Dairy Association have an option, is practically a certainty. Plans for tho building are now in course of preparation.
TROTTERS. Mr R. T. Reid's fino trotting horses Eccentric and Princo Rufus were brought in from Mr E. Sedgwick's place on the swamp a few days ago, looking remarkably well after a ten weeks' spell. They are being exercised on the roads at present as preliminary to tho commencement of training operations proper. Princo Rufus will be got ready for engagements about end of September, and Eccentric will have work in view of the Christchurch meeting.
PAPAKURA. rUBLIC LIBRARY. Tha Board has Lccn informed that it has full legal power to take over the management of the public library, and arrangements will shortly be made to take it over from the present committee. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of tha S. M. Court was held here on Mo diy, Mr F. V. Fraz'r, S.M., being on th2 bench. Herbert Flay, contractor, of Bombay, charged with cruelly ill-treating three horses hy working them while suffering from sore shoulder! and sore backs, wa3 lined £5 and £1 3« coets. A. (]. Matrell, employe) bv Flay, wa* also charged with tha sune offence, and was convicted and ordered to pay 12s costs C. Wilson wag convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs for failing to attend drill. S. F. Talbot, for failing to attend the annual training camp, was fined £2 and 7s cost*. Judgment .Summons. Joseph Hoye v. Charles Piper, claim £3O 7s. Order made for payment of full amount with costs forthwith, in default one month in Auckland prison. Warrant suspended as long as defendant pays 5s per week. Civil Cases. Superintendent Stale Advances Office v. William Brown, ot Manurewa, claim £SB 8s ltM. Judgment for plaintiff by default fur full amount with costs. J. W. Rickards v. J. G Gallagher, claim £SO for damages to sheep caused by dogs worrying sheep. The plaintiff was nonsuited. Santi Rossi v. Dr Ilallen, of Clevedon, claim of £l4 for wages due. Judgment for plaintiff by default with costs £1 3?. LOYAL ORANGE LODGE. The Loyal Orange Lndgc arc holding two church parades here this month. Next Sunday service at the Anglican church will be attended, and on the following Sunday the Prcsbytetian Church will be visited. KIIODES SCHOLAR. Mr W. M. Jones, the Rhodes scholar for ID 13, and who is leaving for Oxford on Monday, was entertained at a dinner and presented with a gold watch on Wednesday evening. Detailed report will appear next issue. TUAKAU. SHOOTING. On Wednesday a match, 10 birds aside, 12 yards mark, between the Tuakau and Pukekohe Gun Clubs was tired here, when the local club were badly beateo. But there was no disgrace in the defeat for the visitors were in great form with the gun, the team, which included a novice, averaging just a fraction over 8 birds. Three broke all their birds, Wilson smashing all his with the tirst barrel, whilst four other members scoied 9 birds each. B. McGahan put up the beat performance for the home team, killing 9 birds, C. Booker 8 and A. Drske 7 following him. Tha conditions were all that could be desirad, and a most pleasant day was spent. The Rod and Gun Club held their tirst annual ball on Wednesday evening. Full report on Tuesday. TUAKAU PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL LEAGUE. A meeting of the Liberals of Tuakau and surrounding districts was held in the Tuakau Hall on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of forming a branch of the Progressive Liberal League, Mr J. C. Dromgool being in the chair. On the motion of Mr M. Black the enrolment of all Liberals present at the nueting was immediately proceeded with, and as a result tho chairman was able to announce the successful inauguration of the branch with an initial membership of 22. Prof. Potter was elected first president of the branch. Mr M. Black secretary, and Mr T. McGahan treasurer. The election of other oflicers was allowed to stand ovei pending a further canvass for members. An informal discussion as to the choice of a Liberal candidate for the Raglan seat then followed, in the course of which Mr J. C. Dromgool, the Liberal candidate at last elcc- ! tion, intimated that ho would be unable to accept rn.trination. MERCER. BUCKLAND. FARMERS' UNION MEETINC. An ordinary meeting of the Bucklaml branch if tho N.Z. Farmers' Union was held i:i the Buckland hall on Saturcay evening, fifteen members being present. THE CONFERENCE. The chairman, Mr Neal, who hnd heen appointed del gate to the Provincial Confererce held in Auckland in Vay, presented hii report, wliiih wa9 listened to by members very attentively. Mr Neul gave a succinct account of proceedings at the Conference, though he did not s;o into detail regHrding the remits. Mr Noal was accorded a very hpn:tv vote of thsnks for !he interesting rept i t he gave. ' WATERING ACCOMMODATION. I A reply whs nreived from the , Franklin County Council to the branch's request that the Council I erect finger posts at all niuin cross I roads in the county, and provide watering accommodation for animals in the railway yard ard on the road side near the ftation. The Council > propose! to er r ct the finger posts, but regretted that they were unable ' to comply with the request re water--1 ing accommodation. The secretary was instructed to ' write to the County Council and thank them for deciding to erect the linger posts, and to ask for a more j explicit reason for not being able to . comply with the branch's request t re watering accommodation. I FARM LABOURERS' UNION. The branch decided to support the resolution passed by the Hamilton * branch re the Farm Labourers' ' Union. Several members spoko on the subject and expressed themselves as being in favour of a Farm Labourers' Union, but considered it 8 would be impracticable for faimcri ' to work utder an award, as farm work was of such a varied nature. WESTFIELD MARKET. e The meeting decided to support the , Provincial Executive's scheme of e putting a buyer in the Westlield fat Btock market to protect fat stock g up to export value. ANNUAL CONFERENCE. Wylie. b g BOMBAY. e FOOTBALL. ■ On Saturday Bombay footballers 0 having a day off, the seniors chalr lenged the juniors to play for a dinner, ceding them 15 points.
