A BIG DISPOSAL SALE.
KENT HERD DAIRY FARM.
Some dairy farmers place reliance upon une particular breed of cows as the most profitable to keep, and some declare by another; but there are probably very few who are not aware of the great value of the Holstein-Friesian breed among dairy stock. For both quantity of milk and quality (the amount of
butterfat) the Holsfein-Friesians occupy u very high place among record-makers. Their suitability for a particular climate or district can only be ascertained by actual experience, which always provides the test of constitution, etc. That this breed does well in Xew Zealand dairying districts, and partic-
ularly in this part of the country, has been amply, demonstrated by Mr. A. 31. Barriball, whose Kent Farm herd has a wide and favourable reputation. The building-up of a good dairy herd, as all farmers are aware, is by no means an
'easy (ask. Not only is there care•fnl selection in consider, hut a pood 'deal of hard labour is necessary to (secure results. A dairy herd such •us Mr. Barriball owns can only he I /got together by the expenditure of a good ileal of hard casli and any .Amount of hard work, and lie is to ; he complimented on his pcrsevcr[%ance in specialising on tliis breed, I ivhicli has fully, proved i!s right to Tank with the best dairy cattle.
j&s announcement of consideral (u district dairy farmers Md breeders is that Mr. Barriball 'lias decided to retire from dairying, and will offer for sale at the AVaiuku yards, on 9th July, the wkilo of liis carefully-selected herd of da'u.y cows, also the heifers and bulls. 111/ building up his herd Mr. Barriball secured some splendid aniwulyf to ui herd of that well-kuowu-Xuranaki breeder, Mr.
HOLSTEINS BEING SOLD.
A. 11. Street, and from Mr. J. Grigg's imported strains. The Kent herd, therefore, is the result of attentive selection from proved milking strains, and are all the more valuable on thai account. The pedigree stock, as set out in the sale catalogue, are registered in either Vols. 1 or 2 of the Herd
! Book, or are eligible for Vol. 3. f In addition to the pedigree animals • a lot of high-class grade stock will t be offered, among which are dairy I cows that are giving excellent rei turns. [ The all-important point in get- . ting a high-class dairy herd to- - gether is the choice of a male ani-
mal. In this matter Mr. Barriball showed commendable enterprise, as in purchasing Lord Oakland De Kol, register number 147, } 01. '-, he secured a bull of a strain that combines the blood of the greatest record cows in the breed. A photo
of this animal is shown above. He is of the real milking type, conforms to type to a degree, is marked perfectly, and altogether is a regular beauty. When our representative strolled over the Kent Farm a few days ago Lord Oakland De Kol showed good condition, and should come under the hammer with an impressive appearance. He has show ring honours to his credit, including first prize and reserve
champion at l'ukekohe last year. His ancestry reads: He Kol Burke. Longlield De Kol Burke—Lady, Lougfield; sire, Springhill Jack (Imp.V; dam, Oakland Beauty 14U, Mutual Paulino, Do Kol (Imp., 74). Mr. Barriball has not specialised in regard to the show arena ; nevertheless ho has a good number of prizes won l»y, this herd, borne of the winners w tfl be mentioned, in
(his article. When hoi tested the herd ranged from ;, >. : > to i.H foi butterfat, which at mice indicates their worth as dairy cows, also considering their heavy milk yield. As "will be gathered by reference to the above photo, Magpie is of splendid type and appearance, and is typical of her breed. She has only just finished milking, and has had a long season, but withal is looking well and showing in calf. In regard to milk yield she gives as much as 701b. per day, and has a good test. At last year's Pukekohe show she was a first prize winner. This animal, as well as practically all the others, is of exceedingly quiet and friendly disposition. She will doubtless be the cause of some spirited bidding at the sale. Among the young stock Lord Waiuku De Kol is of very good figure, has the characteristics of the breed, and is probably " the pick of the basket."' lie is approaching 2 years of age, ami is of high breeding. By Lord Oakland De Kol, dam Kent Princess (sire Yankee Tom, dam Magpie) his credentials require no elaboration. Kent Fancy, sire Duke of Cornwall, dam Magpie, is also an animal of much proinisc. She is now coming to her first calf, and will doubtless be keenly competed for. A prize winner in the show ring, together with her evident quality and breeding, makes her a desirable possession. A fine little bull is named Lord Kent De Kol. by Lord Oakland De Kol—Kent Maid. He promises well at present, as does Lord Kent De Kol, of similar parentage. Perhaps the pick of the young heifers is Kent Gem, a pretty little thing with excellent breeding credentials. Kent Gem stands out as a proposition well worth the serious attention of intending buyers at this sale. Kent Winsome is another animal of outstanding promise, being of lovely conformation and type. She won first prjze at Franklin show, beating the Taranaki competitors of high standing, and has great merit. Rising 4 years, and sired by .Yankee Tom, dam Queen, this cow is one of the gems of the herd. Yankee Tom (by King Manor De Kol, imp.) is a noted prize winner. " A regular little model '' might excusably be said of Kent Gem, being nicely proportione<kand beautifully shaped light through. She is now Hearing her first year, has the Lest of blood in her favour, and is beyond doubt a pretty pictuie. Lord Hal De Kol is a young bull with first prize honours already to his credit. Like many of the others he is a very desirable acquisition to a dairv herd,
Although not showing the lest of condition at this time of the year owing to being in milk somewhat late, Kent Ruby, now nearing W years, still has much in appearance to recommend her. First prize in the show arena as a yearling, and first and reserve champion at 2 years, in addition to her parentage '(Duke of Cornwall, 84, dam Beauty), speaks volumes on her behalf. One of the nicest cows that will he offered is Kent -Beatrice, whose sire was Yankee Tom, dam Beauty. She has a splendid appearance at the present time, and is sure to go under the hammer in nice fettle. Daisy is another flood sort, and can also'claim the best of strains of blood. She is of very good type and colour, and near to calving. Being by Yankee Tom is in itself a high recommendation. In addition to those mentioned above there are other valuable pedigree and appendix animals, as well as a splendid lot of grade dairy cows, some of the latter being show prize winners. That district dairy farmers will take advantage of the opportunity this sale offers for improving their herds seems certain. Besides the dairy stock several «vood half-draught horses will i»l*> be offered at the disposal sale.
