WAIUKU.
Two largo mangels, recently on view at Do Montalk and Co.'s auction mart, show the capabilities of some of our district farm lands. They were grown by Mr J. W. Furmago on Mr E. Morrison's property nt Otaua. One-sixth of an acre carried IMO plants. Of tlio two specimens shown tlio (ridden Tankard weighed 'Jt'dbs and the YellowGlobe L'slbs. If the whole crop showed a similar average weight the yield would work out at about Ho tons to th" acre. The "Essay" evening at last meeting of Waiuku Mutual Improvement Society, held in the Parish hall, was very successful. A verv interesting essay on "Bolls" was given by Rov. 0. A. Vuuglun, show- | ing old and ijuaint customs, ot. . in regard to iish of bells. Miss Woodward gave a short sketch ol the life, 'habits and peculiarities ol Mahomet, the Prophet. MiVs McDonnell's essay was on "Character,'' outlining the ellect of habits and environment upon character. ttre.it praise wns accorded Miss Black for hnr paper on universal suffrage. Mr Fl. 0. Mellsop's subject was "Our Last Evening," being a review of the proceeding, of Impromptu Sporches night. An css.-n was sent in by a member un " The Beauties and Peculiarities ~f Our Auckland Bush," giving a short account of the chief dowers, berries and the remarkable foliage of the various trees, The evening was much en- I joyed '
