Should They be Gazetted ? More Letters To The Council. The matter of gazetting the shop hours for places of business within the Pukekohe borough has been frequently before the Borough Council. It has been found difficult to determine who are snopkeer/ers and there have invariaby been disputes about the signatures attached to the petitions, At Wednesday night's meeting of the Council, The president of the Chamber of Commerce forwarded a petition to be sent to the Minister for Labour certiiivng that it contained a majority of the shopkeepers interested. The petition asked that the following hours be gazetted, to be observed by the shopkeepers in Pukfkohe:— Mondajs. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Saturdays," 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The followiug traders would be excepted :—Fruiterers, confeptioneis, hairdressers and chemists; butchers to open as early as they please. Those signing were:-R. F. Webster, A. 0. Woollett, E. Ramsay, Miller and Co., Perkins and Co., F. H. Kenyon, J. Rankin, W. S. Russell, J. Patterson, Cooper ami Curd, Dell and Son, C. W. Lodge, W. G. Shotbolt, M. E. McGovarn, B. Berridge, T. E. Skinner, Roulston Bros., J. Adams and Sons. These made 18 eigna tares.

The names of those given as refusing to sign wera:—Messrs Roadley, Wright, Lusher, Mill?, Mcßae, Wordleworh, W. Houston and J. A. Comrie.

A list of ehopkeeers aapplied by the town clerk showed a totel of 45, made up as follows:—Shops 33, blacksmiths 3, fruiterers, confectioners, hairdressers and chemist 9. Mr 0. Roadley presented a letter from Messrß Kenyon and Kussc-ll asking to have their names withdrawn from the' petition as they signed under a misunderstanding. Mr Roadley protested that a cettain tradesman "who had made his pile and was about to retire from business" wanted to close him (Mr Roadley) at six o'clock, but that person would go at 6.20 and vend newspapers, (which wss in the speaker's line of business.) Some councillors said this matter had already been dealt with. There appeared to be a general agreement that the petition did not represent a majority of the storekeepers. The petition was ordered "to be received."
