MERCER.

THE SCHOOL BALL. On Fiiduy evening last the School Committee held its annual Plain, Fancy dress and Masq lerada Ball in the Town Fall, which undoubtedly eclipsed all previous functions. No pains and expeuse were t pared by the large number in fancy dress to bring the event to a successful issue. Valuabla prizes for the various competitions were kindly donated by Messrs Valentine, Cartsr, Tribe, Watts, Hallett and the School Cumnuttft:. Marriage's orchestra provided excellent music. The hall was beautifully decoraled, and the condition of the (her was all that could be desiied. Messrs Rilderbsck, Gallery and Smith carried out their duties as M.'sC. in a most capable manner. The judging of the various dresses was in the hands of Misses Benn: tt and Pickett, Mrs Bell ;nd Messrs Pirntt, Marriag?, Gliifoid and Sayar?, their decisions meeting with the entire approval of those present. After the sjpper interval Mr Rippon, chirman of (he local School Committee, presented the prizes to the BJccessful winners, r.s follows: -

Elliott, "Ally Sloper"; b 7 st comic costume—Mr C. Ell'ott, "Ally Sloper."
