WORKS IN PROGRESS. In the Franklin County. ENGINEERS' KEFOKT. At the last meeting of the Franklin County Council the report cf the engineer (Mr McArthur) was read as follows: HOGWOOD'S ROAD, MAUKU HIDING. It is proposed to raise a lcar. for the construction of this new road. 1 was instructed by your Council at a previous meeting to furnish hp estimate of the cost. An engineering survey has been made and the line of road defined. The approximate cost of construction, including , compensation and fencing, is £543 Is. Lr Henry: Does that include the cost of constructing the bridge? Mr McArthur: Yes. Cr Henry: Then with the £IOO grant the people of the district will only have to pay £443. BYCROFT'S ROAD, TUAKAU. Mr R. Bycroft made application to your Council. asking that this road be accepted aa a dedicated road. It was decided that the road be taken over providing it was formed ti my satisfaction. I would point out that the road is not formed satisfactorily. In a letter to Mr Bycroft, the district engineer of railways states that the County Council will be lequirtd to pay the usual tee of £2 fur the issue of the Order-in-Councll and to execute an agreement to tßke over and maintain the road. The agreement will stipulate that in the evei t of the road teirg at any lime required for railway purposes, the Council will pay to the Minister the coat of acquiricg any land necessary to provide a road in substitution thereof, and indemnifying the Government Bgaimt all claims on account of the closing of the road. Under theee conditions 1 would advise ytur Council not to agree to tf.e dedication of this read. This matter nad slrfady been dealt with, the Council having decided to take no further action in connection with the dedication. BOUNDARY ROAD BETWEEN WAIFIPI AND AWHITU RIDING. Two letters ware received at last meeting asking that a poition of this road ba formed. In company with your chairman and some of the parties ii.terested I visited the locality but was unable to definitely locate" the road. Since, however, I have received the necessary data to enable me to do so, and will locate the road as time permits and report fully to your Council. WORKING FLANT. I would respectfully point out to your Council the advisability cf purchasing a working plant, with a capable working foreman in charge under my supervision. The plant would be composed of greder, plough, scoops, two drays, barrows and fuur horses. I would estimate the cost of acquiring plant at about £240. There are works urgently required to be done all o\er the co nty, which cannot conveniently b2 carried out under contract and are to a large to be undertaken by surfacemen; with the above plant I am confident if being able to make a vast impiovement on most of the roads through your county. Cr Renall: I am quite satisfied that what the engineer has said is correct If we are going to make the plant a success we must have the working machinery. In his district h 3 had found it vtrv haul to get horses to work the graders and that wbs the trouble all r und. Not only the plant,. Lut the lime was coming when thty would need stables in the different distiicts as well. Farmers had no titn3 to do contracting work for the Council, so that the Council must run its own staff; otherwise they would lose hundreds of pounds. He moved, That the report be adopted. Ihe chairman moved, That a committeee be appointed to consider this question Cr Campbell seconded. This was not a matter into which they should rush hurriedly. He did not entirely disapprove ot it but it needed consideration. Cr Henry endorsed what had been said about the need of a team, but one team would be of little use. They would require perhaps half-a-dozen teams, and he agreed that the matter should be gone into 1 ; very carefully. The chairman's motion was adopted, the committee appointed to consider the pioposal being the chairman, Cra Renall, Fulton, Henry and Campbell. PRATT'S HILL DEVIATION, KAMA RAMA. A meeting was held by ratepayers interested at Ararimu on Saturday , the 4th inst., at which Cr Flanagan and myself were present. The matter was none into thoroughly and discussed by the meeting.
