WAIPIPI SPORTS.

A Successful Gathering On Thursday, March 20, tlio annual sports took place in Mr W. Jones' paddock", Wharf road. The morning broke rather dull, with a fairly keen south wind which cut right under the pines, but towards midday the wind calmed down and weather conditions were all that could be desired. Betwoen 200 and 300 people were on the ground representing all the outlying, districts, a good number coming from Waiuku and visitors from Auckland. Big entries were received for noarly I all the events. The starter, Mr F. McDonald, got the fields well away together in tirst-class style, and the I judges, Mr Aylward and Mr J. Powell, recorded some close finishes. When the swimming race was called out a big crowd wended its way from the sports ground to the wharf to witness an erent that was something nw in connection with Waipipi sports. Only three swimmers answered to the call of the starter. These were taken out in a boat 75yds. from the wharf that being the starting point. In the evening the usual dance took place in the school and was largely attended. Mr W. Watson was M.C. and Mr 11. Hewitt was musician. The dance was kept going merrily until 2.30. The thanks of tho committee are due to the ladies who so kindly helped with the supper. Results : Boys'race, under 14, H. Cook 1, T. Short 2. 100 yds. Maiden Plate, non winners for five years—G.
