PICNIC AND SPORTS. On Friday last, the local branch of the Farmers' Union held their annual picnic and snorts, lhe day was nice and fine which brought out a large number of residents from their homes, there being close on three hundred present. The day's outing was the result of the work ot the sports committee, the refreshment committee and the committee. All the committees did their work well and left nothing undone that larded to the enjoyment of the gathering. As usual at sach gatherines the secretary has generally a lion's share of the work to do, and Mr S. McCaw, who was tor. secretary of the picnic and spurts, did his share in a business-like manner, and earned the hearty approval of all present. The children's committee consistid of Messrs J. Graham and F. Abbott, and judging by the happv expressions on the face* of the little ore* they must have been well catared for by the two in charge. The refreshment committee also worked hard and provided a good dinner and afternoon tea.
Alter dinner the sports committee took charge and put a programme of 16 events through in gocd time. A number of the events caused a good deal of merriment, especially the finals in the pillow fighting, the last "go" between Culland and J. Gordon being very good. The Siamese rrrce was contested by six couples, in which S. Appleby and Steele and Sowerby and K. Pope dead-htated for first place. In the run-off Sowerby and Pope won, v the other couple meeting with a mishap. Sowerby and Pope showed true sports' spirit by running the final a third time to give Appleby and Steele a chance, which they took by winning the event. The sports committee consisted of the following:—Mesais K. McKenzie, B. Prendergast, S. O'Leary, G. Hayward, J. McTavish (starter) and W. J. Anderson (handicapper). Messrs J. Keith and G. Morgon were the judges and did their work well. Sack race—P. Walden I, E. Pope 2, H. Porter 15 Nine entries.

A dance was held in the hall in the evening and was well attended, dancing being kept up to a late hour. Mrs J. 'lraham and Master A. Graham kindly provided the dance music, while Mr G. Hayward carried out the duties of M.C. NEW BUILDINGS.

It is also rumoured that a local resident intends to erect a Bhop in the statement at on early date.
