Various local bodies in ths Franklin County area have complained of their inability to get suitable labour for roadwork—indeed, to get labour at all. The chief reason is that many of the contractors in a snail way art! also farmers and when the farm calls the contracts most go. But this shortage of workers ia not confined to Franklin. Recent labour troubles ia Taranaki have apparently made contractors very chary ot bindiug themselves to complete contracts by a certain specified date. The successful contractor for three bridges under the Clifton County Conncil, in a covering letter, emphatically pointed out his inability, owing to labour troubles, of guaranteeing to complete all or any ot them by contract date. He would, however, push them forward as expeditiously as possible.
