A RUNAWAY SMASIJ. A runaway occurred on the Union road on Friday nikht whiih narrowly missed resulting in a still more serious accident. It appears that Messrs J. Creamer aul Allen, of VValuku. being misled l>v to shadows, endeavoured to crops thn road near Mr Watson's phtco an l in etriking a ba'k the silky was completely overturned. Fortunately tfie occupants were thrown clear but the horse galbipzd oIT wilh Iha overturned md continued itj mad career for several miles. Coming down tha road leading to the Mauku creamery the runaway narrowly missed crashing into a trap driven by Airs Ash lord, (he most serious result berg a bump on the wheel-hub and the endeavour of Mrs Aahford's horee to fjlbw the runaway. Happily the lioma gate was cljsc at band whira the animal was safely stopped and Mrs AshforJ was none the worse after recovering from the shock of such n close call to an accident. The bolting horse with the trap ultimately pulled up at Mr Glasgow's property on the Tramway road, where the Rig was Bmashcd against a post and the horse got char. The horse (uninjured) and the wrecked gig were recovered by Messrs Creamer and Allen rext morning. LAWN TENNIS. The final) for the Mauku Tennis Club's competition were played on Saturday, resulting in Miss V. Wright winning the ladies singles, for which the prize was a tennis racquet, presented by Mr J. Forbes; and in Mr G Pcrrv winning the prize for men, presented b.v Mr W. G. Pleydell.
