A GAY SCENE.

The reserve presented a very gay scene on Saturday on the occasion of the annual excursion ot the Newmarket workshops. A crowd of about 1800 was present and spent a most enjoyable day. THE HUNUA FALLS.

The question of harnessing the Hunua Falls for the purcose of generating electricity fur lighting and power purposes is still claiming serious a'tention: It is reported that numerous enquiries are beingmade by intending users, and there is every prospect that the scheme will become profitable. As this township is expected to materially aid the scheme it will be the duty of the local authority to take every care in conuerving the rights of the ratepayers. Before any agreement is arrived at, it should be stipulated that a certain proportion of the pofits accruing from the scheme should be handed over to the Town Board on behalf of the residents. It would be a short-sighted policy to concede to an outside authority like the County Council the full rights of controlling such a profitable undertaking without some restriction of the kind mentioned.
