Papakura Water Supply.
TO THE EDITOR.!
bir, —ln your report cf the last meeting of the Town Hoard it was slued that th* mitivl steps art 1 to be taken to negotiate a loan of £10,(100 for the proposed water supply scheme. This matter has been under diacupsion tor some time and it is pleasing to note that some decided move is to be made at 1 ut.
The chairman suggested that the details of the icheme be laid bctorc the ratepayers by means of circulars. But this, I feel sure, would prove unsatisfactory, lor by that method it would be impossible to supply all the information required, ard to reply to all the objections that might be urged in opposition to the scheme. 1 wonl! suggest that after the irsue of the circulars a meeting of ratepayers be held for the further discussion cf the proposal. The purity of the water has already been demonstrated in the icport of the analyst, and the supply is reported by an expert engineer ti be sufficient to meet the needs cf the township for some years to come; but if necussaiy the reservoir could he enlarged at any time at very little expense. The locality whence the supply is to be drawn consists of a long V-shaped gully with steep sides. The land on both sides is reported to be of inferior quality and can be obtained at a low price, and a strong fence alung the mines would keep away all stray cattle and ensure the purity of the water. The only reasonable objection remainlrg Is that of expense, but as this is rather a large question I shall deal with it in my next. In the meantime it is to be hoped the ratepayers will look upon the matter as a profitable business proposition consider the growing needs of tne township, and, as the supply must be provided sooner or later, decide to participate in ita benefits row, bear their share of ita cost and pass it on to their children as a valuable asset.—l am, etc., D.W.J. I'apakura, February 16th.
