Subscribers' Annual Meeting.

Those present at the annual meeting ot subscribers to the Pukekohe library, held in the library on Tuesday evening, were:—Messrs A. B. Barter (president, in the chair), Webster, Eanrs, Cargill, Lawrie, Dr Wake and Rev. F. B. Dobson (hon. secretary). on the balance sheet showed that the members' subscriptions received last year were £lB 6s, as against £l2 19s 6d in 1912, £l6 10s iM in 1911 and £ls 19a in 1910. The library had now been established for 22 years, and was taken over by the Borough Council in June last. Two members of the managing committee were cow nominated by the Borough Council and three were elected by the subscribers.

The number of hooka in the library was calculated at 1452, some 170 new books having been added during the year. The booka taken out of the libiary during the year by subscribers totalled JjM, ot these 65 were history and biography, 45 geography and trawl, 37 science and philosophy, 26 toetrv and line arts, 1980 Action, 27 essays and miscellaneous. The t inl receipts were £99 12a 3d. The chief items were: Balance brought forward £25 6s, sale of piano £2O, members' subscriptions £lB 6s, rents £l6 12a 6d, Government subsidy £ls 15s 9d, sale of baeatelle table £3. The president moved the adoption of the balance sheet, which was carried.

Some discussion took place over the selection of books but the opinion of the majority appeared to be that under the circumstances the best had been done with the money available. Upon examining the financial position it was ascertained that with the loss of the rents that the Borough Ccuncil formtrly paid, before tsklng the library over, the Committee would find itstlf £2O short this year and it waa decided to ask the Borough Coui.cil for h subsidy for that amount. Tbc lighting of the reading room wai considered, Ihs present kerosene lamp being thought inadequate. The Mayor, who was present, said the Council had considered putting acetylene right through the building, J but that had been deferred until some den-ion bad been come to regarding public lighting. The question would probably mine up for consideration at the next Council meeting.—This matter was left to tre Committee to deal with.

Mr Barter, Rev. F. B. Dobion and Dr Wake were elected members to represent the lubscrlberson the committee.
