THE Pukekohe and Waiuku Times PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1914.

LOCAL AND GENERAL.

"We nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice."

Mr W. G. Abbott, of Fukekohe, has disposed oi the well-known trotting mare "Stop It" to Mr Nicholson, of Wanganui. The price paid was £250. It is understood that "Stop It" is to be taken acrose to Sydney. Another attack was made on the Cock o' the Walk at t w e Fukekohe bowling green on Friday night, Lawrie being the challenger. The holder had the best of the game throughout, the final score b:ing Eames 24, Lawrie 11.

After having been down to £2 a ton since Christmas the potato market began to harden up on Friday last, and by advances of half-a-crown a day the quotation last evening in Fukekohe was £2 7s 6d. It is expected that the price will touch £3 a ton by the end of this month and perhaps before that.

Although there are still some oats and other white crops unharvested, the rainfall last week proved a great blessing to mary farmers who had grown very anxious about their turnips. In a number of cases the strike had been very uneven or there had been no strike ut ail, out the soaking rains that fell have resulted in a very quick aod satisfactory germination. During the third week of February Mr Masssy will visit the Franklin distrct. He will perform the ceremony of turning the first sod ct the branch railway to Waiuku, the construction of which will be undertaken without delay. Mr Massey will also attend the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Show, which will be held on February 20th and 21st. Among other visitors to Otahunu on Anniversary Day was Mr Bockett, manager of the Bank of New Zealand. Although not taking an active interest in the game of bowls this season.Mr Bockett is unlikely to forget the art of dropping a bowl well. To make up the required number for a progressive bowls tournament game at Otahuhu the Pukekohe player allowed himself to be drawn into the competition as lead, with the result that he captured the lead's 25s value trophy for most points.
