LOCK AT NEEDLES.
Waiuku Meeting's Rejec tion. Discussed by Mr Gunson. The decision of Waiuku residents to defer consideration of the question of the proposed lock at the Needles until the report of the projected commission on the inland waterways scheme is available, and their expression of opinion that the canal connecting: the Manukau and Waitemata Harbours should be constructed befcre the lock in question, were referred to the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr J. H. Gunson). Mr Gunaon said he had noted the decision tf the Waiuku people. The matter of the commission's investigations was an important one. The Prim? Miiister hid promised this commission, and when in Wellington last week members of the Board and himself (the chairman) had waited upon Mr Massey, who had advised them that the question would be dealt with at a very early date. The commi.sion would bs the result of the representative conference held in Auckland last October, which dealt very fully with the matter of the necessity for the appointment of such a commission. The psoceedings cf that conference had been published in booklet form, and were now available for distribution.
"Ihe merits of the suggested lock at the Needles may be subject to debate," Mr Gunson remarked, "but, whatever the fat; of the canal proposals may be, tte question of tbe lock is unaffected, other than it might possibly become incorporated 'n the la-ger scheme. That, however, could have been provided for."
