THE MERCER RECATTA.
A Successful Gala Day.
Wea'her conditions yesterday morning did not appear too favourable for the New Zealand championship regatta at Mercer. The prospects, however, did not appear to affect the numbers or the enthusiasm of those who had determined to visit Mercer. Launches, gaily decorated with flags, mnvrt to and fro on the river, canoe i glided about between the larger craft, and the rowing ski IT", faking the water for the first event of the day, presented a very animated scene. Altogether, somo s<x or leven thousand people must have been l r jam i at the regatta. The carnival proved most successful in every respect. The racing was Kood, and in the majority of cases the events were gamely fought out to a finish. With the excep'ion of three Waxganui clubs, no clubs outside the Auckland provincial district were represented. The Union . Club, of Wanganui, was particularly fortuna'.c id the New Zealand championship events, winning no fewer than three out of the lour contested. In the champion pair oars and champion fours tho club waa successful in defending its title. The title for the champion double sculls, won last year by Akaroa, again passed into the hands of the Union club, who had held it for two years previous to 1913. The championship single sculls' title was successfully defended by D. Hedfield, of the Waitemata who won it last year Irom C. £. Stone, ft the St. George's Club. The many side-shows established about the grounds also proved a source of amuseme t to many. The native aquatic events, without which no river regatta is ever complete, were particularly diverting. The members of the committee had' spared no labour in their efforts to make the regatta a success, and their energy was well rewarded. Great credit is due to the joint secretaries of the Auckland Rowing Association and the Mercer Regatta Club, Messrs 11. Ulamlicld and A. C. Tribe; also to the other regatta officials. The whole of the events were despatched punctually to time, Mr J. Maxwell acting capably in the position of starter Messrs J. Clark, president of the AH.A., and (1. A. Man inn acted in the responsible positions of judge*, and Mr G. H. Resfon as umpire. Following arc the results of the various events:-*
