Unlets one runs a country newspaper as a hobby it can be a fruitful source of financial disappointment. Nobody but the prop-ietors and the banker (and they don't as a rule advertise the fact) really know what a heart-rending tear it is. Our Opotiki contemporary lets its cat out of the bag in the following raragraph:—" We ate informed that a firm-enterprising, of course —cf Aucklatd merchants intends shortly to open a cheap cash store in Opotiki. Some people appear to think that Opot ki is a veritable gold mine. Well, we have had a quarter of a century's experience, and we could put ths surplus bankirg account into a pewter and still leave rcom for a decent ihirstquencher!"
