What was regarded as a strange communication was received at the last meeting of the Wanganui Education Board from the Education Department in reply to a letter from the Board. It appears that recently the Hoard asked the Department" to issue special attendance certificates for pupils who had earned five first or second class attendance certificates, provided by the Department. Keplyine to this the Inspector-General that it was not considered advisable that children and parents snould he encouraged to strive after such a faultl"s! attendance as that represented by a first clasa certificate, much less a series 01 such certificates. During h child's school career it was possible that in mmy cises it would b3 better for the child to »tay at home. Copies of the correspondence were forwarded by the Board to the Minister of Education, and Mr Allen was asked if the Irspccior-tieneral's remarks had his approval. On December JSUh the Secretary of Educati m wr-tc to the Board stating that ihe Mmu'tcr approved of Mr Hog ben's litter, lhe chaiiman of the Board remarked that the attitude of the Minister and the Department whs very strange, in the face of legislation passed at the instance of the Department, making attendance every day compulsory in primary ~i liooL.
