LOCAL AND GENERAL.
When the names were drawn to see which members of the Pukekohe West Road Board would retire, as provided hy the Road Boards Act, the lots fell to Messrs Woods and Fmlay. An election to (ill the seats occupied by those two gentlemen will take place in May. Mr Roydhouse, who recently resigLed the ecr.torsbip of the Sydney Sunday Times, was a visitor to Pukekohe on Saturday. He calltd to have a look over the "Times'' olfice and expressed himself well satisfied with the arrangements, "the best country office he had seen in New Zealand," was his verdict. Mr W. Coster, who succeeds Mr F. Egginton as postmaster at Pukekohe, took up his duties on Monday. Mr Ccster was postmaster at Russell for 3 years, and previously was for 11 years on the staff of the Masterton post office. Cricketers will be pleased to know that Mr Coster i 9 a keen "knight of the willow.' The usual detail work was transacted at Thursday's meeting of the Pukekohe West Road Buard. Members present were Messrs West (in the chair), Finlay, Boase and Pilkington. It was decided to invite tenders for 100 yards' metal for Camerontown road, the money to come from the Hill loan, and the clerk wa3 instructed to order 250 yards of metal for the Rifle Range road.
After having held the Stars for a considerable time the trophies again changed hands last Saturday on the Pukekohe bowling green. ' The holders were Keith, Perkins. Wright and Blake (s). Uraham played substitute tor Wright. The challengers were Grant, J. Adams, Duncan Roulston and Eanies (s). In the first ten heads the holders only scored a single point, but thereafter they made more headway. With two heads to go they were 1(J behind and the challengers ultimately won 27—14.
A meeting of the general committee of the Men's Own meetings was held on Wednesday evening last, there being present—Mr E. Allan (president), Rev. E. P. Blamires, Messrs J. B. Brown, J. Patterson. J. Hunter, J. Bellhouse, H. Short and J. Pilkington. A statement of income and expenditure was submitted by the secretary and was considered satisfactory. Plans for the future were discussed and a programme arranged for the ensuing four months. The meeting was characterised with a spirit of enterprise and hopetulness and augurs well for the success of the meetings. The quarterly meeting of the oilicials of the the Methodist Church in the Franklin circuit was held in the Church, Pukekohe. on Wednesday last and was well attended. The Kev. E. P. Blamires presided. The superintendent minister reported an increase of 10 members upon the previous quarter. The circuit stewards. Messrs 'f. C. Usher and J. Pilkington. were re appointed tor the ensuing year and society and oth:-r stewards for the various preaching places throughout the circuit were also appointed. Messr. ; A. Fitehett and F. Souster were appointed circuit u ccretarics for Foreign and Home Missions respectively. A resolution was passed in the name of over a thousand persons in the Franklin ar.d Raglan elector ate.-, which the meeting represented, protesting emphatically against the Bill which proposes to increase the number of racing days, the increase of the investments on the totalisator being regarded as a most serious | indication of the hold which the gambling vice has upon ilie community.
