DEATHS BY DROWNING.
I'hc sad drowning accident in 'he Waikalo river, by winch a young man employed at Tuakau lost his life on Christma:. Day. adds still another case to the iong list of presumably ftvnirlsih'fl fatalities if the art of lore generally pracday fistivtiica are 1 y mar ted by drown
ing tragedies, and again and again the public press urgas upon the local authorities the need for encouraging all people to learn to swim. Some time ago the idea of establishing; public swimming baths in Pukekohe wa i discussed, but the suggestion took no practical shape. In inland places there is not much natural opportunity for boys and girls M learn swimming, so that the opportunity has to be created. The climate in this district lenda itself to the exercise aB a pleasurable purtuit. And apart from its healthgiving advantages many untimely bereavements might be avoided if borough councils, school committee, town boards and similar bodies did more than they are doing at present in the way of establishing swimming baths, We would like to see something done in this connection in Pukekohe, in Waiuku, in Tuakau and in every other township in this district.
