Borough Sanitation.
[TO THE EDITOR."]
Sir, —At tha meeting of ratepayers held a monti or two ago in Puke-kohe, one public mau asked why it was that the suburbs of Auckland still stuck to th* " pan system" instead ot going in for sewerage. Articles in this week's city papers show that the Auckland suburbs are not sticking to tLe pan system. Tne articles referred to show that nearly £138,000 has been spent in drainage Echanies already. Orakei storage tanks just completed coat £43,360. Work at Remuera, Newmarket, Grey Lynn, Ponsonbv, Archhill Gully, Mount Eden, Point Chevalier and in other localities is also being pushed on with. The contracts completed last year approximated £127,977 in value, which with £IO,OOO spent in day labour made a urand total of £137,977. I cannot understand anybody keeping to the pan system if they can pessibly afford anything more panitary. Unfortur.atfly, PukeKohe is a sticK-in-the-mud place, aid I f~ar will have to wait for a new set ci' public men in order to get a move on. — 1 am, et'\,
"DISAPPOINTED." [Assuming that cur correspondents statement is cornet we applaud his reply, although it comes whe;; the echoes of the firet round in the fight for progress have blown over. "Disappointtd" is> hardly fair to our public men as a whole. On the Council now we fortunately have some men who can see that the true prosperity tf Pukekohe resti upon the advancem:rit of the town. And in the long run the "stick in-the-muds" won't count. —Ed.J
