RAILWAYMEN ASSAULTED.

' A cowardly assault on two of the officials at the Pukekoha railway station took place last night. About 9.30 a olerk named C. M. Todd, ac companied by a porter named Clarke, had occasion to go down the platform, and on passing the tablet exchange apparatus noticed two Wen interfering with it. Todd cautioned them against tampering with it, and said "it might go' off." One of the moo replied, " You had better iook out or I'll go off." The railwavmen laughed and went on their way. The men who had been spoken to followed them up, and when in a dark place set on to Todd. Clarke came to the rescue, and on tailing for help the men took to their heels. It was found on medical examination that Todd had his jaw fractured in two places. Clarke after taking Todd to the station went up town and found the men in front of the hotel. 'lt is stated that the crowd took the men's part and urged that they should be let go. It appears extraordinary that though the men were cornered they were allowed to get away \yithout even their names being taken. Subsequently Constable Willcocks was informed but so fir no arrest has been made.
