Farmers' Union Meeting. I THE TELEPHONE. i At the monthly meeting of the i Mauku branch of the Farmers' J Union a considerable number of com- ' plaints were made regarding the ' delays occasioned at Pukekohe in ] connection with the telephone. One member said he had to wait two houis to get Auckland. Although the local postmaster bad asked for the number required to be put on the list for next place in an hour's time the person in charge at Pukekohe did . not know a word about it. This ] occasioned the second hoar's wait. ' Another member stated he waited ' two hours to get Auckland, and ' then another party came along and < got it inside of five minutes. It 1 was made clear that the local post- i masters were not to blame, the f trouble all seeming to be at Pukekohe. ( It was resolved that the secretary < write -to the chief-postmaster and 1 endorse the action of the Pukekohe \ Chamber of Commerce as reported in ] the "Times " of 12th inst. , UNUSED ROADS. 1 Considerable discussion took place ] regarding the proposal of the County i Council to dispose of unused roads in s this district. Members were agreed ] that it was not a wise move to sell , any roads in this riding. The unused . roads were not costing the Council anything and were generally being used by the owners adjoining, and with the early pro'pect of the Waiuku railway it was agreed that more rather than less roads would be needed. Regarding the two chain Tramway road, all were unanimous that one chain of this could be profitably dis- ( posed ot and that it would be much ] better in the hands of adjoining ratepayers than growing noxious weeds, ( as is the case in trany places at ' present. ' The secretary was instructed to ( write to the Council through the ' councillor for the riding (Mr J Henry), asking thai this branch be ' given particulars of any road or ' roads that it was proposed to sell ' and requesting that no action be taken till an expression was given < from the Union. ' NEW MEMBER. ( Mr F. Schlup was successfully ] elected as a member. j METAL. I The apawls that have so long lain J on the Church road have at last 1 been crushed and the metal laid J where specified. Considerable dis- 1 satisfaction has been expressed at the size of the metal, it being I greatly in excess of what is expected for good road construction, for it is now generally recognised that lumps the size of a soup plate do not contribute to the making cf a ' good road. It is satisfactory to ' notice that patching work bad been dene on the Union and Adolph's ■ roads, where some very bad ruts j were almost a source uf daager to tbe . heavy waggons that ply rsgularly on , these important thoroughfares. LAWN TENNIS. j During the holiday week the Mauku Lawn Tennis Club members and friends have had some exciting j games on the courts. On Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Saturday the courts were occupied practically all ; day, one set after another awaiting i their turn for The hot, muggy weather caused tne afternoon cups of tea to be greatly appreciated. CKICKET. The cricket club suffered a 'dis- '. appointment on Boxing Day. A ! match had been arrbnged with the i Arawa club from Auckland, and although Mauku was fully prepared and sent a waggoa to Pukekohe for the expected visitors they failed to 1 make an appearance or send any '.
