AT THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Fortnightly Meeting. Following is the completion oi the report of the Pukekohe Borougli Council meeting. DOUGLAS ROAD. Cr Pollock reported he had Leen too busy to go out and inspect Douglas road.
DITCHES. Cr Hamilton wanted to know who bad to clear the ditches an the public road, instancing ons on AJanubau road. As the councillors thought the Council was responsible it was resolved to attend to the ditches referred to. NEW SHOWGROUNDS ROAD. It was decided to expend £5 on repairing culvert and other work on the nan showgrounds road. FACTORY ROAD. Cr Polbrk asked for something to be done to the Factory read at once. The foreman explained that metal had been put on in the worst places. HAWKERS. L. Askew drfew the Council's attention to the street hawking clone in Pukekohe, and urged the imposition of licenses.—Decided that the clerk look up - the by-laws. Councillors expressed the opinion that they could do nothing as v "the hanking of perishable goods was permitted." AUTOMATIC MACHINE. The Council declined to grant percussion to a shopkeeper to place an automatic chocolate machine on the footpatb. THANKS. The Pukekhe branch of the New Zealaid Farmers' Union forwarded a resolution "thanking the Major, councillors and burgesses for their hospitality to the special constables on the date of their departure for Auckland." GOODb-SHED ROAD. The District Engineer returned the Agreement regaroing the taking over of the new road to the gcodsshed ,at the Pukekohe station, stating it was in the recognised form used in handing over roads to the control of local bodies. The Council had declined to sign the agreement because they were called upon to keep the tence on the boundary in good order. v The Council, after discussion, decided not to depart from their previous decision, and the letter was referred to the committee dealing with the matter to reply to.
A DEPOSII. H. M. Gordon recently tendered for concrete kerbing and channelling in Marukau road. His tender was accepted, but subsequently he declined to go cn as he had made a mistake in his price. He cow wrote to the Council asking for his deposit to be returned. Ihe Council decided not to refund the deposit, and the foreman was instructed to carry out the work by day labour. FERGUSON'S QUARRY.
J. H. Fergusun gave notice under date December sth that ha stopped all carting operations (sandstone spawls) from date, pending an agreement. The Mayor said there were some 80 yards of spawls in the quarry. it bad been arranged with the contractors to cease spawling. Cr Pollock: Can we get this'out? The Mayor: Apparently from Mr Ferguson's letter we cannot. Cr Patterson said Mr Ferguson had told him he would not object to this being carted out, provided the carting did not damage the road. The foreman said Hogan, who had the carting contract, wanted to know the position. If the Council were not going on straight away he claimed they should return bis deposit. HJr Hamilton: Solomon ought to have been a Borough Councillor. It was decided that the matter of the contracts for spawiir.g and carting be referred lo the Quarry Committee to deal with. Cr Hurley proposed, and Cr Pollock seconded, that the Council obtain scoria spawls for the remainder cf Harris street.—Cariied. POTrER'S ROAD FOOTPATH. Mr Hubbard, on behalf of the residents interested, declined to contribute to the proposal to put the footpath on the north side of Peter's road. He drew the Council's attention to tbe m>isarc3 the pine trees were at the end of the road. The foreman said be had written to the ownSr of the trees referred to. Mr Hubbard offered to make 10 chains of footpath on the south side if the Council would put in a culvert. Ihe Council decided to adhere to their previous decision.
