1475 opposed by ratepayers. The Ratepayers at the meeting, held in the Oddfellows' hall on Monday night, were asked their opinion about the Council's proposal to spend another £ISOO on Harrisstreet and £IOOO on King-street. Mr Perkins asked if it was not a fact that all the potatoes that it was supposed would go along Harrisstreet had not come along Kingstreet. Mr Pat Hogan advised the Council to go on and spend what they had and let the ratepayers see what sort of a job they were getting. Mr Dell said they were talking of doing Harris-street and were neglecting the main west road which was full of big hole 3 to the end of the boundary. Mr Kennelly asked if all the loan money was spent. If not the Council were premature ; they should spend what they had before going any further. Cr Hurley said a single track would be no good ; they must have a foundation for the roads. The idea of the Council was to make good roads and put a foundation to the whole of Harris-street. Mr Perkins : We haven't got a foundation in King-street yet ? Cr Hurley : If you see Harrisstreet done well you would agree to put down a proper road in Kingstreet.- A good solid road would be cheaper in the long run than mere tracks.

Mr Perkins : Let us start on the main roads. Go along Queen street to the foot of the hill.

Cr Bilkey : Will you have a 1C foot road or aoG foot one ? What we want to know is will you give us £ISOO for Harris-street and £IOOO for King-street '1 Mr Perkins : It is up to us to put the best road from the factory to the railway station. Voices : Harris-street takes it.

Cr Pollock, replying to Mr Perkins, said the waggons did not go along Harris street now because the foreman had asked drivers not to use it at present. t Mr B. H. Andrew moved—

" That the question of raising foney for Harris-street, and. ing-street be left to the ratepayers." Mr JR. H. McGough seconded. Mr P. Hogan moved, as an amendment, <! That no more money be borrowed until the old loan monies are spent."

Mr Ben Andrew, of Edinborough street, seconded the amendment, which was carried overwhelmingly.
