THE WAIUKU RAILWAY.

For Construction Work.

The item in the Public Works Statement (presented to Parliament on Tuesday) of closest interest to this district is : " Waiuku railway £10,000." The total sum allocated is £728,000. Referring to this district's line the Statement says : " Last year a branch railway to connect Waiuku with the Main Trunk lino was authorised. Trial surveys to locate the most favourable route have bec-n put in hand during the year, and are still in progress. The small expenditure during the past jear was charged to the vote for surveys of new lines, but for the current year a special voto of £IO,OOO is proposed to permit of construction work being begun."

COUNTY COUNCIL'S APPRECIATION.

GREAT SAYING TO OUR ROADS.

Cr Henry got a surprise at the Franklin County Council meeting on Wednesday. The Waiuku railway was mentioned and some councillor said that £IO,OOO had been voted for its construction. Cr Henry thought it was a ioke, but when Cr Lyons tola him it was announced in the papers a smile which partially expressed his delight came to Cr Henry's face. Cr Wilcox : I am very pleased to see the railway go ahead. It will save our roads a great deal. Cr Renall : I'd be better pleased if it came my way. The chairman (Mr Motion) suggested passing a motion of appreciation.

Cr Renall considered it better to defer any action in this direction until they had some official communication.

The chairman moved, Ihat the Council write to the Prime Minister expressing their appreciation of the liberal grant towards the Waiuku railway. Cr Henry seconded the resolution, which was carried.

Cr Renall : I've a very good mind to move a resolution regretting that the railway is not coming through Awhitu.
